USI landscape analysis for Cambodia

This Universal Salt Iodization (USI) landscape analysis for Cambodia offers government and stakeholders insights into the USI program’s status and recommendations to address bottlenecks and enhance implementation. It encourages reflection on interests, commitments, objectives, and responsibilities to achieve USI, ensure adequate iodine intake, eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD), and promote better mental and physical development.

The report is based on document reviews, interviews with USI program implementers, stakeholders, salt industry members, fish and soy sauce producers, market retailers, and observations during market and salt production visits. Presented initially at the Stakeholder Consultation Workshop in Phnom Penh on January 31, 2024, it includes additional insights from the meeting’s discussions.

The report confidently describes the current situation and offers relevant recommendations. Cambodia has had past successes, but current challenges include inadequate iodization, quality control, and regulatory enforcement, leading to the prevalence of non-iodized or poorly iodized salt.

Nevertheless, the accumulated experience, knowledge, and dedication of the government, partners, and industry form a robust foundation to revitalize the USI program.
