Regional coordination mechanism for Eastern and Southern Africa
Strengthening food fortification systems
Five years ago, IGN and UNICEF brought together stakeholders from 25 countries to form the Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) to address iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAR). Initially focused on salt iodization, the RCM has evolved to encompass overall regional food fortification strategies. A recent report highlighted its significant success, attributing achievements to its management under a public health mechanism and a structured framework for concerted action. The RCM has played a pivotal role in combating iodine deficiency, fostering collaboration, providing technical expertise, and facilitating policy development. It continues to drive progress towards the sustainable elimination of IDD and improved nutrition outcomes in the region.
