Overview

China's salt Iodization program

China has implemented a rigorous and comprehensive approach to combating iodine deficiency disorders through its National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Monitoring Surveys. These surveys are extensive, covering 2,800 counties, and have an estimated budget exceeding 0.3 billion Yuan annually since 2016. To indicate the sustainable control of IDD, the country measures eligible iodized salt consumption, which reflects regional standards for iodization levels rather than the global WHO standards. The goal of China’s program is to achieve eligible iodized salt coverage of more than 90%.

Leveraging technology for better data

With the rapid development of network technology, electronic surveys have emerged as a cost-effective alternative to traditional national surveys. IGN’s team in China distributed electronic questionnaires, allowing for the swift collection of data on iodized salt consumption in targeted areas, utilizing a sentinel surveillance method. Platforms like WeChat have enabled widespread participation, with data being provided data from 2017 to 2022 and then compared with national survey results.

A new sentinel survey method

The sentinel survey method has proven effective in providing dynamic and timely insights into iodized salt consumption, closely mirroring the results of national surveys. The method’s success is supported by China’s Monopoly Measure and Regulation against IDD, ensuring the quality of edible salt in the market.

This approach helps understand consumer behaviour, identifying factors influencing iodized salt consumption and pinpointing high-risk populations or regions. The sentinel survey method stands out for its ability to collect information quickly and at a low cost, making it a powerful tool for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of iodized salt consumption in China.
